Science and women scientists to break down prejudices
Professionals who lead projects, reformulate their disciplines with their research and advances, with whom we share a city and, moreover, are women scientists. The professionals of the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA) have tried to fight prejudices and show Science and women scientists as a knowledge and a professional group close and accessible to hundreds of children in Teruel. They have done so to participate in the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the World Day of Girls and Women in Science.
Among the activities, the engineer Tamara Civera, in charge of the scientific database, and the astrophysicist Fátima López, an operator at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory, gave first-hand accounts of their experiences and careers at the Segundo de Chomón and Vega del Turia Institutes. Helena Domínguez, also an astrophysicist and part of the ARRAKIHS space mission team, gave two talks at the Anejas Public School for pupils from different primary school groups.
The talks, in which more than 350 pupils from the different educational centres took part, aimed to inspire through the trajectory and experiences of these professionals. Their projects and daily work are also proof of how diverse perspectives, including those of women, enrich innovation. The debate also emphasises how science can contribute to building a more equitable world. This year's focus is also on the media's portrayal of women in science and how it needs to improve in order to foster a more inclusive scientific community.
CEFCA is also touring schools with AstrónomAs. The Centre is providing five schools and institutes with an exhibition that traces the trajectory of the most famous female astronomers in history up to the present day. A journey that is a master class on astrophysics and which allows the main concepts of the discipline to be explored in depth. The 16-panel exhibition is accompanied by didactic units and games and will be enjoyed by more than a thousand students. The exhibition will tour the centres until June, because the celebration, like the spirit of this World Day, goes far beyond 11 February.
