Next Saturday, 29 March, there will be workshops for schoolchildren, an informative talk and the Plaza de San Juan will become a small ‘observatory’ with several solar telescopes. This is the proposal prepared by Teruel City Council and the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA) to experience the partial eclipse that will begin at 10.53 am. There will be more surprises and all activities will be free of charge.
Professionals from the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos have celebrated the World Day of Women and Girls in Science with various activities in schools in Teruel. Their presence aims to highlight the new role of women in science and to remind us that, historically, from Marie Curie to Vera Rubin, women have already shaped and led various scientific disciplines.
A collaboration between the two institutions will facilitate entry to schools in Teruel, which will enjoy a guided tour and a complementary workshop.
Nine of the most important astrophysicists in history or a journey through the Solar System, star formation, galaxies and the Big Bang await them. Galactica, the first park in Europe to explain and observe the Cosmos, opens its doors to schools in the province of Teruel. A collaboration between the Centro de Estucios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA) and the Diputación de Teruel will allow 3,000 schoolchildren to visit Galáctica free of charge this academic year.
Discover how the stars sound, or touch the sky on a winter night. This is the proposal made by Enrique Pérez Montero, astrophysicist and populariser, who will be giving a workshop for the blind and a talk open to the public at the Teruel Campus. Enrique, who lost his sight during his scientific career, directs Astronomía Accesible (Accessible Astronomy), a project that comes to the city of Teruel thanks to the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA).
Some 40 researchers from Spain, Brazil, China, Colombia and the United States have learned about the first works based on the results of J-PAS survey. The meeting reviewed the projections and ongoing research on the first square degrees of the map of the Universe. In the framework of the XX J-PAS Congress, mapping data were released for the first time to the international scientific community.
The Point Spread Function (PSF) quantifies the distribution of light scattered by the combined effects of the atmosphere, telescope, and instrument. Most research to date has focused on the central few arcseconds of the PSF. However, extending this analysis to several arcminutes would enable the removal of scattered light produced by dominant stars, which often obscure astrophysical sources. This issue was highlighted by a team of CEFCA researchers at the latest meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society.
The extent to which light can be scattered from an astronomical source is illustrated by the "blue sky" effect. In optical observations, the PSF provides a quantitative measure of this scattering. While most surveys consider only the core region of the PSF (a few arcseconds), this narrow focus limits the ability to remove scattered light from bright sources. Such light dominates the image and interferes with the observation of fainter astrophysical features.
Students from the Secondary School “Segundo de Chomón”, in Teruel, accompanied by the President of the Government of Aragon, Javier Lambán, the Minister of the Presidency, Mayte Pérez, and the President of the Provincial Council of Teruel, Manuel Rando, have participated in a workshop to learn about the work carried out at the Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre and at Galactica, the Center for the Dissemination and Practice of Astronomy.
The center is going to offer two guided visits along the day to bring the sky to cycling enthusiasts who visit the area on August 28
For four days Teruel will become a forum for top-level astronomy. International astrophysicist will debate on future studies of Galaxy formation in the framework of large area cosmological surveys of next decade. This workshop will take place from the 3rd to the 6th of September in the head office of the local Government in Teruel, and it is organised by the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA), with support from the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC).
