An eclipse for everyone in Teruel

An eclipse for everyone in Teruel

The Plaza San Juan in Teruel will be a privileged place to experience the partial eclipse that will be visible throughout the peninsula on Saturday 29 March. The aim is to make this astronomical event available to everyone. It will be available to all ages, with workshops according to educational levels, and with a talk for the general public on the eclipse of 2026. It has not been possible to see a total eclipse on the peninsula since 1912. And, above all, telescopes will be available for everyone to literally get closer to the Sun. The Teruel City Council and the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos are the organisers of the day.

The start of the activities will coincide with the astronomical event, an eclipse that will begin at 10:53 and end at 12:33. The children's workshops will start at 11:00 and are divided into two age groups. The youngest, aged 5 to 7, will simulate an eclipse with their hands, and will learn the basics of understanding an eclipse. The older ones, from 8 to 11 years old, will build their own eclipse and learn the peculiarities of the lunar orbit that make an eclipse possible. With scientific rigour and a desire to have fun, the workshops will be carried out in collaboration with teachers from schools in Teruel.

The climax of the eclipse (11:42) will also mark the core of the proposal with the deployment of telescopes that will turn the Plaza de San Juan into a small ‘observatory’. A SunGun telescope specially designed for solar observation will be available to the public, as it projects the solar disc and allows the discovery of phenomena such as sunspots. Next to it, several telescopes of the Agrupación Astronómica de Teruel (ACTUEL) will be installed, which will play a leading role in this activity. The telescopes will be available to the general public.

The 29th March will serve as a small rehearsal for the leading role that Teruel will play during the total eclipse of August 2026, as it will be one of the best places in Spain to enjoy an event that has not been visible on the peninsula for more than a century. The surprise will be the inauguration of what is to become the symbol of the preparations. A sign that will serve as an ambassador and information point for all those who visit Teruel to discover that it will be a privileged viewpoint for the eclipse of 2026.

The day will close precisely by looking ahead to 2026. Javier Cenarro, director of the Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón, will give a talk to explain the impact of such an exceptional astronomical event as an eclipse. It should be borne in mind that, in the middle of the day, and in the month of August, sunlight will be switched off for a short period of time. It is not only a question of the impact on communications or natural spaces, but also the international expectation that it generates.

All activities are free of charge. Attendance at the talk, which will start at around 12:15, will be possible until full capacity is reached, so punctuality is required. Finally, the telescopes will be available from 11:00 in the morning until the end of the eclipse at 12:33. The only essential and unpredictable condition is a clear sky. If the weather makes it necessary, the workshops will be moved inside the CEFCA building, the former headquarters of the Bank of Spain.
